Loki and Dejah

Norse gods don't all live on Asgardia. A few of them live in New York.

And none of those Norse gods actually look like Norse gods. This particular one likes to hang out in expensive coffee shops and use their wifi to play World of Warcraft on his laptop.

He's not wearing his mail or horns today, but instead a rather ironic I ♥ Asgardia shirt. (He doesn't. He really, really doesn't.)

"By all means."

With the slaughter over, Loki takes a quick break to drink his coffee. It's his sixth one already, having just been going straight down the menu with each new order.

"Oh, my gods, that is awful," he says, nearly spitting it out. Banana coffee is not something he likes, it seems. "Have you tried this? It's terrible."

Dejah glances up from the page, her brow furrowed. "Which one is it?"

Loki turns round to look at the chalk-written menu on the wall. "Banana spice frap," he says. "It sounded promising, but it was all lies."

[dejah_thoris]

She wrinkles her nose. "Yeah, no. Banana and coffee should not mingle, except maybe in the form of a pastry."

"You should try it. It's absolutely horrible."

He says this like it's a good thing. Somehow.

[dejah_thoris]

She chuckles, and lifts her own mug. "Thanks, I think I'll save it for another day. I've got my chai and it's lovely."

He turns back round to look at the menu again. "I haven't got to that one yet. Maybe in an hour or so."

Loki closes his game and sits up a bit more, trying not to be obvious about craning to see the sketchbook.

She smirks down at the page, well aware of what he's trying to do, and keeps sketching. "I'm sorry, did I interrupt your game?"

"No, I was probably going to get banned anyway," Loki admits.

Even though he can't see what she's drawing, he leans against the arm of the sofa he's on and watches her.

"Is this for a school thing, or do you just like drawing strangers?"

She glances up and then back down, shifting her pencil on the paper to start sketching his entire lanky form instead of just his face.

"Speed portraits. Supposed to be stealth, too, but you caught me. It's a way to keep my skills honed."

Too many hours in front of the easel makes Dejah a dull girl.

"I catch everyone," Loki says, as if it's plain fact. "You can't sneak up on me, no matter how hard you try."

Well, there are some magicks that might let that happen, but Loki's in possession of most of the known artefacts with that purpose already.

He looks like any other 20-something in a coffee shop. Terrible haircut, black nails, slightly-smeared eye-liner. He should probably freshen that up, actually.

"I wasn't trying to sneak up on you. Just capture your soul on paper, that's all."

She flips the sketchbook around and shows him.

"How'd I do?"

There's a very, very brief moment when he seems almost wary, but he's quick to pick up on her actual meaning. He leans in and inspects the drawing.

"That's very good," he says honestly. "I think my nose is a little more narrow, though."

She turns the page back around and glances between it and him. "Hmm."

She doesn't erase and make the change, instead, flipping the page and starting again. Her entire demeanor becomes a bit more intent.

"You into art at all?"

[lokiofsassgaard]

"I like art that's good," he says. "I have a Jackson Pollock at home."

He watches her draw, eager to see the results of this new sketch.

"Do you just draw, or do you do other mediums as well?"

It takes her a moment to respond. She blinks a few times and seems to visibly change gears to speak to him.

"I started out in mixed media, back when I was in LA. But I changed to oils four years ago. Haven't looked back."

"I'd like to see that some time," Loki says. "I can draw stick figures, and that's it. Stick figures doing obscene things."

And he looks rather pleased with even that.

Dejah's smirk grows, even as she doesn't look up.

"A marketable skill, indeed." She focuses on the sketch for another few strokes of the pencil. "You know the Boiler Room Gallery, up on 9th?"

"No, but I'm sure I could find it," Loki says.

He pulls out his phone and does the intelligent thing and Googles it.

"Have you got an installation there?"

[dejah_thoris]

He Googles it, and the major show going on right now has her face splashed all over it.

"You could say that," she says, distracted now, adding the last few lines to the portrait. "Here, how's this one?"

Again, she spins the sketchbook toward him.

"Wow," he says, looking at some of the pieces displayed on the site.

Loki looks up at the new sketch and nods appreciatively.

"Yep, that is me," he says. His attention makes its way back to his phone, and he may be adopting the sort of expression one wears when wondering if something is for sale.

He'll see a combination of old world techniques mixed with modern subjects, and a use of color and texture that certainly hails back to her mixed media influences. And the prices indicate that someone thinks she's doing something right.

She turns the sketch back, frowns, and keeps going. This one isn't done yet.

"You should drop by sometime. It's better in person."

"I think I will," Loki says.

But he's being rude, so he puts his phone away again.

"So, that J in your name? Which language is that from, because it can go about... five ways, I think."

Dejah laughs, bites her lip, shakes her head a little. "DAY-zha. It's -- a long story."

One published early in the century. Her dad was a huge fan.

Loki smirks. "It can't possibly be longer than mine. Call a kid Loki, and the story goes back centuries."
